1st CALL FOR PAPERS FORUM 2001(DRAFT-3)
6th INTERNATIONAL HCH AND PESTICIDES FORUM
ORGANISED BY THE PLANT PROTECTION INSTITUTE, POLAND IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE IHPA
The Polish Plant Protection Institute (PPI) affiliated to the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Food Economy together with the International HCH and Pesticides Association (IHPA) is organising the 6th International HCH and Pesticides Forum at the PPI's Conference Centre in Poznan on 13-15 March 2001.
The International HCH and Pesticides Forum is a technical forum, open for discussions and interactions among the pesticides manufacturing industry, international, national and regional authorities, NGOs, Research and Development Institutes, contractors, consultants and other knowledgeable and interested parties. The aim of the Forum is to find technical solutions to the problems arising from the production and application of pesticides.
Main Forum 2001 objective:
This forum focuses on the problems of obsolete pesticides problems: the scientific and practical solutions.
Pollution from pesticides may occur in different forms:
At former production sites, in their immediate surroundings and at present and former stock piles as hazardous waste and obsolete waste all over the world, and in soil, groundwater, surface water and riverbed contaminations. Diffuse soil problems due to application in the agriculture have caused immense problems, which have to be tackled. Groundwater problems, especially generated from waste and soil contamination, generating groundwater pollution and creating a threat to drinking water supply, have become more and more to be seen as international environmental priorities of the first order. In agriculture high emphasise has been put on better application on pesticides by means of e.g. Integrated Pest Management and Progressive Pest Management within the framework of obtaining sustainable agriculture. Due to better praxis the occurrence of future obsolete pesticides should be avoided.
Proposed topics of the 6th Forum are:
· Obsolete, unwanted pesticides and problems in contaminated land and water resources
· National inventories with focus on Central and Eastern European States*
· World-wide inventories*
· International organisations - Positions and opinions
· Risk assessment tools
· Research and development of innovative and cost-effective solutions
· Sustainable development, preventive measures and future strategies
· Results, case studies and field experiences
· Site visits
· Workshop on "concerted actions"
*In order to obtain inventories of the various countries, papers should include sufficient information about locations of production sites, storage sites, contaminated sites expected amounts of waste and soil contamination at these locations. Further recommendations and suggestions which actions have to be undertaken to complete data for necessary inventories and/or necessary actions to be taken.
At this stage 2 special sponsored sessions have been arranged by the IHOBE, S.A. of the Basque Country and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which deal with special problems and achievements of Basque Country and Norway.
