Conference

Engineering Education in Sustainable Development

October 24th/25th 2002, Delft, The Netherlands

Delft University of Technology will be hosting a conference on Engineering Education in Sustainable Development.

Sustainable development is a challenge for the engineering community. Delft University of Technology decided in 1998 that all of its engineering graduates, working towards careers as designers, managers or researchers, should be prepared for the challenge of sustainable development and as such, they should leave university able to make sustainable development operational in their designs and daily practices.

Teaching engineering students how to incorporate sustainability in their work was not an easy job, as there was a lack of teaching experience and study material. To tackle this lack, various approaches were developed. As time went by, we discovered a fast growing number of colleagues at other institutions struggling with the same problems. The great number of abstracts that were submitted (185) overwhelmed us. The papers cover a wide range of subjects:

  • From micro level design problems to the problems of global socio-technological change
  • From single courses, to changes in the educational system as such
  • From the problems of chemistry to architecture and telecommunication

We were also amazed of the great number of countries from which we received contributions. Sustainable Development has become an important challenge for education in many engineering schools. We are therefore proud to present a conference programme that we think will greatly support the integration of the challenge of Sustainable Development in Engineering Education.

Pre-conference symposium "The Ecological City"

In 1997 the DUT interfaculty research program "The Ecological City" started. It aimed at realizing a sustainable approach in the building process over the whole life cycle with a substantial decrease of the environmental load. In 2002 this program will be finalized.

On October 23rd 2002 the main results of The Ecological City will be presented at a symposium. These results concern design, special quality, energy, water, social aspects of sustainability, models to calculate the level of sustainability, decision models etc. Also an outlook will be presented about the research to be performed in a new program.
