In the 1990s an astonishing transformation began at Chiquita Brands International, a transformation not compelled by any government or policing agency, but driven by an unprecedented voluntary shift in focus. In an unusual partnership with the NGO, Rainforest Alliance, Chiquita set out to improve conditions for its workers, minimize the environmental impact of its farms and conserve the rainforest surrounding its plantations. On 15 April, Yale University Press will publish this book in North America (yalebooks.com); in May, the Press will publish it in London (sales@yaleup.co.uk).
