IAIA’05:  Ethics and Quality in Impact Assessment

In 1980, a small group set out boldly to make impact assessment an international, professional endeavour based on common values and shared experiences.  They created the International Association for Impact Assessment.  Now with over 2,500 members from more than 100 nations, IAIA will explore the fundamental questions of ethics and quality in the impact assessment profession at the 25th anniversary conference.

 

What is ethical conduct in impact assessment in actual experience given political forces and business pressures challenging our integrity?  How can impact assessment better support transparency in decision-making and good governance?  What are the criteria and standards for independent reviews and monitoring?  When things go wrong, what roles do independent panels, ombudsmen and court cases play?  How do we achieve quality while also developing capacity in impact assessment, and are there trade-offs?

 

The IAIA’05 conference event offers an opportunity for those who practice, pay for, review, are affected by, and litigate impact assessment to explore these issues.  Pre-conference training courses and technical visits will also be offered.  In addition, a one-day conference on environmental review documents under little NEPA will be held in conjunction with the Section of Environmental Energy and Resources of the American Bar Association.
